Baby abandonment cases stun Bindura – ZimEye

Baby abandonment cases stun Bindura

Residents of Chipadze suburb in Bindura are searching for answers after two babies were abandoned in a banana field and discovered at different intervals on Tuesday.

Kudakwashe Mavhunga, a scrap metal collector who came across the first fetus after 12 noon, before the second was discovered in the evening, narrated the shocking incident.

“Around 12:00 I was looking for scrap metal and then I discovered a baby in a plastic paper bag. I told the local councillor, who called the police and they came and took the body away. This afternoon I was heading home after finishing with the police and I was with my colleague to carry another bag and we discovered a cloth with a fetus on it,” he said.

District 5 Councilor Chipo Musonza expressed concern about the unusual event.

“It is now a cause for concern whether people are using banana plants to dispose of babies and I will be approaching the council to have them removed because the situation is unsustainable,” he said.

The baby abandonment incident has ignited the issue of safe abortion.

Councilor Musonza added: “I kindly ask women’s action groups to intensify lobbying for a safe abortion law because babies are now being killed after they have developed.”

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the incident and said investigations are still ongoing.
